It is just thick enough for a uniform layer of color, just barely thicker than a layer of 'tarnish'.Pushing in the same direction can waste a number of years before good tone and control is gained. Consider this a gentle "push back" when one is advocating "lip out". It's not necessarily a benefit to the student novice, or a "one size fits all" depending on the style one plays. Dr G. The smallest change in the bore/ inner diameter/ wall thickness of a bow or neck can make a HUGE difference in how a sax sounds. Play two saxophones (well set up) from the late 1930's and make some notes on what you felt behind the horn. Then rebuild both horns with fresh resonator pads, and make more notes..
